While buying green is not always in the budget these days, repurposing is always a great bet! That's why I love the ideas offered at Repurposeful, an eco-friendly blog brimming with frugal green advice. With everything from 4 new uses for an old shower curtain to (more importantly) reducing day-to-day waste, Repurposeful's practical approach has inspired me to do a quick 5-minute toss into our forgotten 'outbox'. Wet Room Wisdom

Can we say I have some catching up to do? Won't bore you with the details, but let just say that toddlers and technology don't always mix. But big thank-yous to those of you who've checked in. So now that I have a new monitor :-) Let's chat!

Truth be told, the time away allowed me to indulge in another voyeuristic activity - attending Open Houses! Here in Brooklyn, this economy certainly makes a renter like myself want to have a 'looky-loo' to see what's out there. And I'm telling you it's not a pretty sight! So many homes under 900 sq. feet and with hefty price tags to match! Well, as you might imagine, teeny homes equal tiny rooms. One postage stamp-sized bathroom in particular I can't seem to get out of my head.

For a diminutive space such as that, I think a wet room is order. Popular in Europe, but yet to catch on stateside, wet rooms or shower rooms feature a sink, toilet and open shower area where the water converges to a drain in the floor.

Livingetc has lovely photo selection of these small yet airy spaces. For a twist, the final two pics demonstrate how a glass or wall partition can be added for practicality or modesty. Would you try something like this in your home?

'Shopping' My Etsy

This week, I was pleasantly surprised to receive a kind comment regarding my last post on homemade art. A reader named Nadine mentioned she had recently discovered the crafty goodness that is Etsy and it made her think of Pretty*Practical! Awww, thanks Nadine!

And yes it's true. I do have a special place in my heart for Etsy. I've always found it to be a great go-to resource for special little items that won't be seen everywhere and Etsy is invaluable when you need gift-buying ideas for that 'hard-to-shop-for' friend/relative. You know who you are! :-)

Of course, there are tons of talented crafters to choose from and we all have our faves - so here are some of mine:

1. Simple printed ceramics and wooden blocks from Paloma's Nest above are both earthy and elegant.

2. Be still my heart with these large scale floral prints from Kaiku. So beautiful!

3. I'm loathe to share this one :-) Gorgeous and very affordable cushion covers from Ruth's Crafts.

4. Hammered copper earrings and glass cocktail rings from Saffron Creations. These are fierce!

DIY Fridays: Homemade Art

Gosh, I haven't done a DIY Friday in a while! So it's about time, right? Okay guys, this time we're getting artsy and all you need are non-toxic paints (preferably); a couple of brushes; paper/canvas; and an open mind!

Example 1: The art in the window above is simply a pair of paintings made by my children. For us, these windows are a constantly evolving gallery. You too can scoop this abstract style by cutting a generous length of drawing paper (sold by the roll) and applying lots of freestyle brushstrokes in primary colors until you achieve the desired effect. We hung ours from the window with binder clips but any other type of clip or adhesive will do. Note: Our neutral living room and our informal attitude make these paintings look completely at-home. Also great for enlivening the view.

Example 2: If your style is more formal, a stylized art piece may be more apropos. In our kitchen above, the 'sunset' canvas was also created with the help of little hands. I was inspired by a similar-looking Marimekko fabric but didn't have 'Marimekko money'! ;-) My little daughter (4 at the time) helped apply wide swathes of yellow, orange and red paint. Then, I carefully blended the layers to create more depth. Note: You have to know when to stop. Blending can be addictive!

We always get great compliments on our home-made art. But maybe we just have kind friends! However, I think a few homespun pieces give a home a cozy, lived-in feel. If you have children this a great way to spend a lazy Saturday morning. No kids? Then it's time to channel your inner child. :-) So grab some art supplies and get busy! Have a great weekend!

Requiem for Domino

As most of you know by now, the much-beloved Domino announced yesterday that it will be folding with March 2009 being its last issue. I don't know about you, but when I heard the news I was quite bereft and reflexively went to the Domino website (which will also be shuttered) hoping for something - a sign - a glimmer of hope - I don't know. I came away empty handed. Domino was the only magazine I looked forward to every month - like a little gift in the mail and it will be dearly missed.

In the meantime, permit me to send a virtual 'shout-out' to Nick Olsen, Domino's online Deal Hunter. An uber-talented decorator, Nick's column is a hilarious must-read that's totally on-point when it comes to decorating ideas and advice. Currently, Nick is on a White House decorating kick with my fave posts being his 'speed decorating' inspiration for Malia and Sasha 'Fierce' (as he dubbed her) Obama's rooms.

By the way, if there any early Domino subscribers out there - I'd love to receive scans of your fave 2005- 2006 issues to share with late 2006 subscribers like myself. I'm thinking a vigil might be in order. *sniff*

Finding My Style

Those close to me know I rarely watch television. However, every Saturday at 3:00 pm I do make an exception for HGTV's Find Your Style! Hosted by Karen MacAloon also of Design Remix, this is my weekly TV fix.

Using style 'tells', Karen deciphers the homeowner's style and guides them in designing their room of choice. Karen then adds the finishing touches which are always fabulous! Note to all design snobs - Karen's open-minded attitude is infectious and has made me appreciate styles I wouldn't normally care for. She also shares lots of design tips and tricks that anyone can use.

Last night, my curiosity got the better of me and I gave show's online style quiz a try. I must say, I was quite surprised at its accuracy. Billed as Rustic Comfort, my style is detailed below:

"Part updated country, part ethnic flair, both with a contemporary look and feel. You need a home with casual and practical style – an environment that'll work for kids, pets, company and more. The emphasis is on simple yet attractive, durable furniture will hold up over time while your colorful accessories energize and entertain for years...Function is a key consideration as well. A multi-purpose ottoman that doubles as a coffee table or storage unit would work for you."

Although I' not sure about the label, most of the style assessment is spot-on - right down to the ottoman. F.Y.I the photos on the HGTV site don't do Karen's work justice. Ya gotta see the show! However, the quiz is a worthwhile endeavor. To check it out, click here.

Unexpected Inspiration: Museums

It's only Wednesday and I'm dreaming about the weekend. Is that bad? Well, let's think of it as planning ahead :-) Apparently, this one promises to be frigid but if you're feeling intrepid Pretty*Practical recommends exploring the great indoors!

Specifically, your local museum. Museums are one of my favorite places to soak up ideas on displaying art, discovering new color combinations and curating your own collections. At the American Museum of Natural History I fell in love with the driftwood horse if the first photo above. Can't you imagine this looking awesome in a spare modern home? I also loved the trellised windows (right) featured in an exhibit room. So intricate and pretty!

Last but not least, how striking are these graphic groupings of charcoal drawings? Bringing it into real life, the attached home design photos illustrate how simplicity along with an infusion of natural elements is key to a restive atmosphere.

And what about this colorful trip down memory-lane? The candy advertisements above are featured in actual vintage trains at the New York Transit Museum - a Brooklyn-based gem that kids and grown-ups will certainly enjoy. And as you can see, this palette of muted red, yellow and blue can make for spaces that are both lively and livable.

New Italian Design School

Founded by veteran architect, Marc DiDomenico, the school builds upon Florence's rich history of art, culture and design by combining modern technologies with Italy's imaginative culture. Several years ago, I assisted on a shoot at the home of a lovely Finnish lady. Oh, everything was divine! From the food to the decor, and it was all presented in such a beautiful, simple and gracious way. Since then, I've had a deep love for all things Scandinavian.

Case in point, the delightful Swedish blog, Purple Area. Written by interior designer, Susan Larsson, Purple Area is a veritable hub for inspired decor ideas. Susan is blessed with a great eye and always seems to have the most amazing design finds - clean and modern with just the right warm touches.

Small Moments

Growing up, January 6 officially denoted the end of Christmas. It was the day to ruefully pack away the decorations and return to 'life as usual'. Of course, this ritual could not be conducted a day late for to do so would mean a year of bad luck! Today, as I remove ornaments and holiday cards, I can't help but feel a little nostalgic.

This holiday was quiet but very meaningful for our family. My husband took some rare time-off and we were able to enjoy the little things like the gingerbread house my daughter made at school; delivering petite greeting cards; traveling around on wintry nights to enjoy the holiday lights and delighting in our children's toys as if we were kids again. So for now, I'll cherish these little warm memories till next...

Frugal Foodie

Yesterday, a dear friend was kind enough to pass along this post by La Tartine Gourmande. The topic was potatoes and it was surprisingly very fascinating. In fact, I was completely enthralled by Bea's stories of growing up in France and picking potatoes with her grandmother. It was so sweet and charming and made me think of my own Granny who was formidable cook herself.

With Thanksgiving feasts now a fading memory (hope everyone had a good one :-) whipping up Christmas goodies is my latest fixation. I already have some of the basics like cranberry sauce, corn muffin mix, and sliced pineapples which I swear makes all sort of casseroles seem fancy :-) As you're guessing by now, I'm no Martha or Granny for that matter, but I do love being in the kitchen. And since ours is tiny, everything in it must be functional and preferably do double-duty.

Our local freebie newspaper, amNewYork, recently did a great feature on the kitchen gadgets you need to get your cooking on for the holidays. Their recommendations included:
1) When purchasing knives, start with either an eight-inch chef's knife or a seven-inch Santoku. Then add a paring knife and a bread knife. Yep, no big block of knives - those three are all you need.
2) You should have a cutting board - never use a countertop.
3) Invest in a cast-iron Dutch oven as it's very versatile and can go straight to the table.
4) Beautiful bakers are great but a simple Pyrex 9 x 13 dish is a real workhorse for anything from baking brownies to a lasagna.
5) In terms of pans, you need a two-quart and a four-quart saucepan. Also, a good sized saute pan and a 10-inch skillet. For baking, two round cake pans, an eight- or nine-inch square plus a loaf pan for baking bread or meatloaf are all you need.

I really love the practicality of these suggestions and I also thought they may help those of you who want to pare down a kitchen that's a bit over-stuffed with utensils and gadgets. Are you already planning menus for the holidays. I'd love to know what's cooking in your kitchen!

An early Happy Thanksgiving! Here at Pretty*Practical we have so much to be thankful for and I'm sure you do too.

Tonight, in the spirit of togetherness we ventured to Macy's pre-Thanksgiving Day Parade balloon inflation on Manhattan's Upper West Side. Despite the brisk weather, we put on our game face and travelled several blocks of back-to-back balloons weighted down by nets and sandbags. Random moment: spotting Mayor Bloomberg! Looks just like he does on the tele :-)

Anyway, we had an awesome time. Above, the Pretty*Practical sneak-peek before these babies take flight tomorrow. And look out for Horton the Elephant - he makes his Parade debut tomorrow. Have a great day!

Pretty Palettes: Ethnic Modern

So here's the new color inspiration I'm loving. The images are from two separate Better Homes and Gardens spreads. Although the style of each homeowner is completely different, I think their aesthetic is totally tied together by a palette of deep chocolate brown; coral red; pink mustard; and lots of white.

Both homes also incorporate natural area rugs as a textural accent. I'm calling the look ethnic modern. It really great way give a bright white interior big personality, no?

Window Shopping: Kinokuniya

Want to go shopping with me today? I've been saving this one for you. :-) After hearing 'blog-whispers' about an awesome Japanese bookstore in Manhattan, I made a point of popping in after a meeting. And I was not disappointed.

Located opposite New York's fabled Bryant Park, Kinokuniya is a product-packed gem boasting three floors of hard-to-find goodies. In addition to tons of Japanese magazines and books of all genres, you can expect sweet finds like stylish stationery; kitschy toys; pretty kitchen linens; and exquisite wrapping paper. For intrepid crafters, instructional books on origami jewelry; soap-making and sassy knits abound.

Confession: I actually missed the entire upper floor. Sensory overload! Don't worry, I'll keep you posted on my next trip. Saw anything you liked? I have my eyes on the lovely koi stationery but that's another story. :-) In the meantime have a great weekend!

I swear there's a 10 degree drop in temperature between our home and kindergarten pick-up that doesn't help any. Good afternoon my practicalistas! Hope everyone is feeling psyched about the weekend. I sure am. Lately, I've been super-busy with my real job (freelance writing/PR) but no fear I'll still be sneaking in some fabulousness this Friday! :-)

By the way, I have a confession. Since last month's earnest promise to tuck in early my words have haunted me. Here's the skinny: I . Just. Can't. Do it. Unless I'm terribly ill or suffering from severe exhaustion, my night-owl tendencies simply threaten my resolve to hit the sacks early.

A couple nights ago however, I tried something different and I'm liking it. To give me a buffer between busywork and bedtime, I've taken to curling up with a good read before drifting off to sleep. It's so wonderful I actually look forward to getting into bed - something I dreaded before. I've also rescheduled my bedtime to around 10:30 p.m. - a more realistic time based on my well-documented nocturnal struggles. :-)

Hopefully this little tweaking will help. In the meantime, I think lovely timepieces like the ones above would inspire me to stay on track. Anyone else in the same boat?

Finding Family-Friendly Digs

Happy Tuesday everyone. Hope you had a wonderful Columbus Day!

I actually spent yesterday afternoon catching up on a ton of reading. One article that caught my eye was a New York Times piece on city families and the trials of apartment-hunting. It was really interesting to see other families sharing similar challenges like trekking up and down flights of stairs; worrying about bothering the neighbors; and having enough space for storage or play. The Times also offered some great tips for finding kid-friendly apartments. You can check them out, here.

In the not so distant future our family will definitely require more space as the kids grow-up and need to spread out. On my wish-list: a backyard! Really, it's all I care about and it's the most practical of all my desires. To be able to open the backdoor and say "go run" is a heaven to me. In fact, I'm still drooling over the modern Brooklyn backyard (below) featured in the May 2007 issue of Domino. Definitely my idea of an urban retreat!

Another nice extra would be a bay window. So fantastic! I imagine myself outfitting it as a cozy reading nook like Victoria from sfgirlbybay.

I saw it the other day via Desire To Inspire. It called out to me. It yearned to be mine. Do you see it? There. That little red-gumdrop-of-a-pouf tucked under the sleek white desk. Yes, that's the one. I haven't stopped dreaming about it ever since.

While some may dismiss Moroccan poufs as a trend that's so last year. I think these ottomans are in fact a beautiful basic - fun and functional for everyday living. And, I've rounded up my faves just for you. From the pricey square orange ottoman that will make your room to the smaller scale (and budget friendly) camel patchwork ottoman that's great for kids.

Happy Monday y'all!

I hope everyone is feeling rested and ready to jump-start this week. I spent the weekend bringing some semblance of order back to our home as we've been a bit off-kilter since school resumed. Finally, the kids are on a great schedule and Mom is in a happy place :-)

And of course, last Friday I promised to share some tidbits about myself. So here we go:

I am 5 foot 3 inches but many people assume I'm taller. It's what I call 'tall energy'!
Growing up, my favorite show was 'Style With Elsa Klensch'. Now my guilty pleasure is the Rachel Zoe Project.
I am a very empathic person and can cry at the drop of a hat.
Although I love cooking for my family, I could easily subsist on Post Trail Mix Crunch!
I was born and raised on an island but can't swim a stroke.
My favorite quote is, "love many, trust few, always paddle your own canoe." - Author Unknown.
I don't watch scary movies. Bad things happening to even fictitious characters is not entertaining.
Frivolous but true: I attended the same high-school as Rihanna - different years of course. Go Ri-Ri!

Friday Pick-Me-Up

Well folks, you have a perky blogger here! I actually managed to fall asleep last night after 8:00 pm with my kids and didn't wake up until 6:30 this morning! I really have to do this more often.

Normally I stay up until the wee hours doing all manner of things - washing dishes; picking up stray toys and other detrius; prepping school stuff; blogging! But let me tell you, that 10+ hours sleep was so refreshing! It also made me realize that Mommy needs a schedule too.

So starting today, I vow that on weeknights I'm off-duty at 8:30 p.m.! I will take a relaxing shower; put the kids' bedtime music on repeat; kiss my hubby and head to bed. Yes, I won't be able to pull this off every night and but putting it in writing will help hold me to my word ;-)

Another feel-good moment yesterday came via Linda at Lime In the Coconut. If you haven't checked out her blog yet you must! As you all know, I loooove tropical style. And Linda is quite frankly living the dream! Blogging from her lovely Florida hacienda, Linda's musings on sunny, laid-back design are my online staycation! Linda has also generously awarded Pretty * Practical a Hooked On Houses Hooked On Your Blog award! Thanks so much Linda for my first blog award! Gosh, I'm feeling mixture of pride and shyness all at once.

As I feel Fall's first whispers this week, I find myself drawn to all things cozy - like the inviting atmosphere at Purl Soho in New York. I am absolutely blown away by these unexpected arrangements featured in Germany-based Myself magazine. I particularly love how the carefully-considered props interact with the flowers/plants to 'tell a story'. Really makes me rethink the role nature plays in the home. So inspiring!

DIY Fridays: Framed Corkboard

I was tooling around the Pottery Barn's online catalog recently when I came across this framed corkboard. I immediately thought, "Hey, I've done that!" A generous-sized 36x48 inches, this memo/inspiration board is at home in any setting but will set you back a cool $149. So here my friends, is Pretty*Practical's frugal but fabulous version. :-)

I repurposed an old beech RIBBA frame that no longer functioned as such due to missing back hinges. Yup, too many art swappings. I also had an inexpensive cork noticeboard from IKEA that had seen better days.

First, I painted the frame white to contrast with the cork. Then I removed the cork board's thin wooden frame and cut the board down to size. Finally, I applied wood glue to the inside edges of the frame and inserted the cork board leaving it to dry.

Yes, my version is Pottery Barn's 16 x 20 petite cousin, but you can certainly 'upgrade' by purchasing a larger frame and cork board. And with IKEA's large 27 1/2 x 39 1/4 frame retailing for $27.99 I would say you have another $121.01 to splurge on cork ;-) Work it people!

Look what I spotted recently at the W Hotel in Times Square. Isn't it lovely?

Resting on top of a huge ottoman, the arrangement is comprised of a large plexiglass tray with the rectangle vase placed inside. The graduated magenta flowers and the 'floating' tealights add a nice touch.

But my favorite element has to be the pretty paper (I believe) beneath the plexiglass tray. The 'watery' colors make the arrangement pop and the pattern can be switched out a whim. I'm totally inspired to try this at home. This would look great too if you're hosting an intimate party, no?

Fashion Week Trendspotting

A note from Pretty*Practical: For some unknown reason my pics mysteriously disappeared from this post. Anyway, here they are again. Sorry guys!

This was the scene yesterday when I passed by Fashion Week at the Bryant Park tents. A handful of intrepid photographers snapping away and fabulous folks hoping to get past the velvet rope without an invite.

Last Thursday our local freebie newspaper, AM N Y ran a great feature showcasing designer sketches for Spring 2009. I don't know about you, but I just love the color and the whimsical feel they evoke. Although we'll be seeing plenty of the real deal this week, I thought it'd be fun to distill their trend predictions and consider the ramifications for home decor. Serious stuff, right? :-)

Anyway, here are the terms that were bandied about: modern; futuristic; bold accessories (plastic, crystals); metallics; minimalism; muted tones; nature; poppy colors; water colors; femininity; bohemian.

Overall, the emphasis appears to be on buying great basic pieces (specifically modern, streamlined investment pieces) and making it pop with bold accessories. Yes, a basic design tenet, but how will it play out Spring 2009 Home?

Here is Pretty*Practical's take:

beautiful pillows and rug with 'watercolor' effects.
blinged out light fixtures festooned with large crystals.
fabric featuring large scale 'nature' motifs and burled wood occasional pieces
oversize vases in super-shiny plastic...I'm thinking a faceted vase in mandarin orange or lime. West Elm are you hearing me? ;-)
worldly bohemia via items 'picked up' from exotic locales...this could be anything from 'vintage' Parisian tea-towels to Indian elephant figurines.

DIY Fridays: Fabric-Covered Lampshades

It has occurred to me that we haven't had a DIY Friday in sometime. So here is my weekend challenge. While browsing in Brooklyn Heights over the summer a quick trip into decor mecca, Nova Zembla, revealed a lighting lover's paradise. Aren't these lamps awesome? I fell hard for the colorful bases and kicky printed shades. Sadly, kicky prints meant pricey. But, I knew this a project a praticalista could pull off!

Testing...Testing...

While shopping for some additional school supplies yesterday I came across a non-toxic adhesive called E-Z-Tak. Removable and reusable, it's used to hold items in place and appears similar to the museum putty sold here. Totally practical if you live with kids, pets or klutzy significant other :-) but have pretty things you want to safeguard.

Of course, some of you will say it's called "putting your stuff away." However, I truly believe that families and and a least a few pretty accessories can co-exist. My only rule is that decor should never be precious. So I shop accordingly and never buy anything I can't part with.

Which brings me back to this putty. I've had good luck so far with my cherubs but a little extra 'breakage' insurance never hurt, right?

I used E-Z-Tak to adhere this little ceramic bowl above to a shelf as well as some wooden letters to a wall. For the price (less than a buck) I was surprised that it held everything firmly in place. Will let you know if that changes. Has anyone else ever tried E-Z-Tak? Is the museum putty (few dollars more) a better bet?

Happy Monday! Hope everyone had an awesome Labor Day Weekend!

For some of us in New York, Labor Day signifies the annual West Indian-American Day Parade in Brooklyn. With close to three million revellers, this is one of the largest parades in the United States. It really is a feast for the senses: lots of vibrant costumes; pulsating calypso and reggae music; and savory food. A little (ahem) rusty to partake in gyrating, I stayed on the sidelines with the fam and snapped a few pics - above is a montage.

I did have to shake a leg though when my good friend Simone at LilOrangeBook alerted me that Desire To Inspire (the go-to source for home decor eye-candy) featured Pretty*Practical as one their recommended weekend reads! You should have heard us squealing like teenagers! Thank you Jo and Kim, your recommendation is such an honor! And a warm hello to new readers!

And of course, today was back-to-school for NYC kids. My oldest began kindergarten today and the 'baby' will soon turn three. Where did the years go? As a mom, it's really a bitter-sweet feeling to see them grow-up so quickly. However, I am truly blessed with that they are bright, loving and healthy. Just another little reason to celebrate.

Know what's my favorite part of interior design? Vignettes. They're what I hone in on first when flipping through magazines or watching a design show 'reveal'. And I swear I could create them all day long if you let me! Back in the day as an editor, I was fortunate to learn from some of the best fashion photographers the art of styling still-lifes to sell product. Well, the same concepts hold true for your home. So here is my 5-step primer:

1. A theme is a good starting-point. For example, the vignettes above tell a color story - reds and browns to the left and greens and blues to the right. In the opening photo, the pottery collection seems to be about rounded shapes and smooth textures.

2. Mix it up. In the photo above, the ordered arrangement of the markers and books is balanced by colorful 'chaos' of craft supplies and personal mementos. In the photo below, a small bust and slim figurine balance the angularity of the framed photos.

3. Take heed of height. In the final two photos below, notice that your eye gradually moves down from the tallest item to the shortest and there is no stark white space. This creates a pleasing composition.

4. Grab your digital camera and start snapping. Photographers always assess image composition and quality of light before actual shooting. Your photos allow you to do similarly by creating 'distance' between how you perceive your vignette and how it actually looks.

5. And of course, play around and have fun. To me, vignettes are so personal and give little clues about a homeowner's interests and passions. It's not brain surgery so if you get bored switch things around. Add or subtract items. Just make it you!

Food For Thought

Is the luxe kitchen is losing its luster? You know, the 'modern' kitchens revealed ad nauseum on our favorite design shows where the old solid wood cabinetry "just had to go" or walls had to knocked down to improve flow. Of course, we all enjoy the resultant eye-candy. But sometimes I can't help but wonder, "is it all worth it?" Like the episode of Moving Up where the homeowners spent over $150,000 on a new kitchen! Hello, what ever happened to reduce, reuse, recycle?

I was therefore thrilled to see in Ready Made magazine (via Apartment Therapy) the kitchen of Angela Medlin. Designed almost entirely with salvaged materials, her hearth is the antidote every granite-topped, travertine-tiled, stainless-steel-applianced kitchen in America! While I know this look is not mainstream, I think Medlin's awesome work demonstrates that you can create a warm and inviting kitchen with elbow-grease and a little ingenuity.

In our home, the simple act of moving the fridge about three feet away from the window and mounting two shelves (the top one not exactly straight ;-) has made a big impact. Originally stained cherry-red, we painted the shelves to match the wall color and now use them to house appliances and supplies. An IKEA magazine rack was added to organize larger cookbooks and voila - a useful prep niche!

A very Happy Monday everyone!

So, last week I confessed that the Olympics has me hooked. Well this weekend I pretty much went nuts as Jamaica won Gold medals in both the men's and women's 100 metres. The ladies did a clean sweep while Usain Bolt clocked a world record 9.69 and Trinidad and Tobago's Richard Thompson nabbed silver. Big up my Caribbean peeps!

So what does all this have to do with interior design? Why an awesome color combo, of course! Black, gold and green is a snappy palette that looks really fresh when paired with bright white. Whether it's a sunny yellow chair; a graphic tome; or a sassy paper suitcase, this bold palette will certainly add zing. Enjoy!

While shopping the market this weekend, I was tickled to see West Elm offering cable-knit pillows. Persistence Does Pay Off!

Pull your chairs up folks, this is going to be a long one. You see, about 3 years ago I bought a cute baby-blue sewing machine with visions of sewing little outfits for my daughter. Although I had some sewing experience (primarily hand-sewing), after purchasing the machine I realized I was clueless about actually operating one. Overwhelmed into inaction, I simply put it away until I found a 'chance' to use it.

Fortunately, while assisting my sister-in-law in making a slip-cover for my sofa this spring, I had a light-bulb moment that this wasn't brain-surgery! So, I began by observing the little things my sister-in-law would do like threading the bobbin; changing a broken needle; or sewing a zig-zag stitch. After she went home, I would give myself 'homework' and try to pick up where she left off and even referenced the manual occasionally to solve problems. The latter was very excruciating for me. However, ever so slowly my confidence increased as I would do little projects to challenge myself.

So, imagine how proud I felt yesterday when I successfully recovered this canvas tote! The tote is a few years old and looked the worse for wear so I revamped it using leftover fabric from the slipcover project. With a hastily-made pattern of the tote frame and a couple of fittings, this was the result:

Although I had a few hiccups along the way, I followed my Granny's mantra,"learn to leave good enough alone." Wise words I tell you! I fixed what was important and left minor imperfections as-is.

Hopefully my opus will inspire you to face a daunting task head-on. Really, it's not about having great skills, it is about overcoming your fears and breaking things down into manageable chunks that give you a sense of accomplishment - not frustration. Sometimes attaining perfection isn't the endgame but rather the pride in completing a project to the best of your ability.

How pretty is the Fall lighting collection at West Elm? I mean, really! I love the exposed bulbs paired with the beautiful domed glass. And I am rather fond of the metallic table lamp bases topped off with the dark linen shade in particular. I've heard lighting referred to as the 'jewelry' of the room and in the case, I'm inclined to agree!

Did I tell you how much I love coffee-table books? Not only do they celebrate your hobbies/interests, they also add a dash of panache to your living room and keep guests occupied if you have to step away for a sec. The downer is that they can be quite expensive.

So, with an eye out for a deal I spotted this terrible mish-mash of books in Marshall's recently. But I knew there had to be some hidden gems so I pulled a few for you.

There was literally a book to appeal to every interest including cooking, horses, aviation and travel.

And check this! Each of these large tomes was under $10! I can imagine a couple of these stacked on a large coffee-table and mingling with a few favorite objets. So chic!

The best things in life are free. But sometimes they come from the dollar store!

Monday's post on Caribbean design has me thinking of home. So I'm sharing one of my favorite beachy things - a lovely Asian-style bowl which I filled with pretty shells - all from the dollar store.

Currently, this arrangement resides on our coffee table for all to enjoy. My kids love to play with the different shapes and textures ( I removed the delicate starfish) and it makes me smile every time I see it.

Caribbean Chic: MACO magazine

Carnival season's in full swing in the Caribbean! Oh the food; the music; the dancing! I can literally imagine myself there soaking up the fun and sun. However, since my budget calls for a 'staycation', I thought I'd channel an island breeze via MACO, a Caribbean lifestyle magazine published out of Trinidad and Tobago.

Derived from a French patois verb meaning 'to mind other people's business', MACO features the inspiring island homes of locals and ex-pats alike. More importantly, MACO offers a fresh perspective on what is commonly thought of as Caribbean design.

In addition to a mix of modernist and traditional, plantation-style abodes, MACO's homes are also infused with influences from places such as Africa, Asia and the Mediterranean.

While I usually pick up a copy of MACO when visiting my family in Barbados, this little gem is also available at Barnes and Noble - a first for a Caribbean-based magazine.

As the heat index continues to rise, an oasis of modern style awaits shoppers at Abitare, a home accessories boutique located in tony Brooklyn Heights. I was lucky enough to discover this little gem recently while window shopping with my daughter. Co-owned by the talented team of Joanne Esposito and Lizzie Hand, Abitare offers decor and gift items that meld both form and function. Isn't that so Pretty*Practical?

The store is styled like my favorite kind of home - lots white (including white floors); beech wood; and pops of vibrant color! There, I was greeted by the charming Lizzie Hand and was pleasantly surprised to see such a well-edited selection at affordable prices. Of course, there were splurges too but just about anyone could leave there with something they love.

Today while roaming the aisles of Burlington Coat Factory in search of a cute kettle I came across these pretty Asian-inspired wall decals. Priced at $19.99 these are a definite steal!

Short on time or imagination? The packaging illustrates the scale of the decal in relation to a club chair and illustrates several ways to design the decal.

If decals are a too bold a choice for you, I also spotted the same motif embroidered on a cute 'silk' pillow. Throw a pair of these on your sofa and you're all set! With the summer in full swing, I did a little end-of-season shopping this past holiday weekend. At the top of my list? A cute ombre blouse. Comfort Room

Happy Monday everyone!

I never thought I'd be so thrilled to say that! Last week was crazy mix of birthday parties; Pre-K graduation (yay!); and two sick babes at one point or another :-( But thank God, my precious pumpkins are on the mend!

In what little down-time I had, my focus turned to less weighty matters like Room and Board's newest mag-a-log. Entitled "Welcome Home - 48 pages of inspiration and ideas for your home," Room and Board's soft-sell technique suckered me in from the first page.

My pulse rate took a dip as I flipped through page after to page of beautifully styled interiors. The attention to pattern and texture was amazing and proved that if done right, neutrals aren't boring, they're down-right brilliant!

The mag-a-log also included profiles of real customers who have decorated primarily with Room and Board merchandise as well as mini-features on industry experts like Apartment Therapy's own Maxwell Gillingham-Ryan. Congrats Maxwell!

All in all a good 15 minutes was spent hanging out in Room and Board's grown-up yet relaxed world. Do subtle marketing tactics like this work for you? Or do you feel like, "save me the wooing just products and prices please!"

Around The Blogosphere: Ferm Living

As much as I enjoy writing my own blog, I love to read others as well. I am truly amazed by the abundant creativity that is showcased daily from the most far-flung places. Case in point, Design*Sponge's recent 'sneak peek' of the home of Denmark-based Trine Andersen, owner of Ferm Living.

Trine's home is so delightful it warranted several second peeks on my part. From the bold wallpaper choices to the many pops of color (love the bedding and the coat rack) it was absolute perfection! And who wouldn't want to be invited for lunch on that lovely deck? I am packing my bags for Denmark as we speak!

Trine's home is a wonderful example of using color and pattern to create an inviting atmosphere. Note how she applies wallpaper to one focal wall for big impact. And, by keeping her base colors neutral (warm woods mixed with black/white/gray), Trine is able to layer saturated colors for a look that is vibrant not busy.

IKEA's In The House!

Yay!!! I can hardly wait! The excitement is mounting for the opening of IKEA Brooklyn in Red Hook tomorrow June 18 at 9:00 a.m. sharp.

Previously, IKEA was accessible only via a 45-minute car ride to Long Island (most New Yorkers use public transportation). Or via weekend shuttle from the Port Authority in Manhattan to IKEA in Elizabeth, New Jersey. For enterprising (crazy) folks like myself it was often a three-hour round trip excluding shopping time!

New York City isn't known for its big box retail scene due in part to space constraints. WalMart has been spurned several times and only in Summer 2004 did Target make its 'first metropolitan' debut - also in Brooklyn. So this is really big for us!

What I'm Loving Now: Storage In White

Some of you may recall my post on Benita Larsson and her practice of buying everyday supplies in white. Today, I thought we'd explore this idea with storage.

Below, I've culled some white storage pieces that would work in almost any room of your home. My faves are CB2's lacquered Osaka boxes - great for stashing jewelry or even the remotes! I also love IKEA's Asker containers which can be wall-mounted to save kitchen-counter or even craft-table space.

Yes, I know she's a worldly gazillionairess, still I was surprised that her style seemed well beyond her 15 years.

Growing up, sheer lack of square footage made rearranging my bedroom pointless. But I did my best with special touches like Kirk Cameron posters and pretty arrangements of perfume bottles. My favorite? Exclamation cologne!

96 Degrees In The Shade!

It's been a scorcher in New York today and hardly conducive to coherent decor blogging! To keep cool I love to make popsicles. I swear my family eats them all summer long.

Unusual 100% juice mixes like orange-peach-mango or cranberry-grape are best for big fruity flavor. And, each individual popsicle is often less than three ounces of juice (great if you want to limit sugar). These are so yummy, my grown friends are hooked on them too!

You can find basic popsicle molds just about anywhere including your local supermarket or cuties like these Tovolo molds in the 'Star' pattern available at Amazon.com.

So go ahead and relive your childhood with this fun, cool treat!

Seven, Eight Lay Them Straight

Friday is laundry day at our house. To make the task lighter, my husband oversees the washing while I handle folding. For years though, one domestic skill eluded me - how to properly fold fitted sheets.

I finally learned the secret from my Mom two years ago after the birth of my son. As she offered invaluable assistance during those first busy weeks, we bonded as only mothers and daughters do - over folded laundry. Anyway, my Mom's advice essentially follows the 4-step technique illustrated below by the kind folks at Better Homes and Gardens.

1. Folding fitted sheets works best on a flat surface, such as a table or bed. Lay the sheet right side down, elasticized corners facing up. Neatly turn in corners and edges so they're straight. Grab the right top corner, flip it inside out, pull it toward you, and tuck it inside the bottom right corner. Now tuck the top left corner into the bottom left corner. At this point, the sheet is folded crosswise, with the top half of the sheet folded into the bottom half.

2. At each layered corner, place a hand beneath the diagonal fold to flatten and smooth.

3. Fold the sheet in half lengthwise so the layered corners are on top of each other. Tuck so that three of the corners fit into one. Smooth edges.

4. Fold the sheet in half lengthwise again, then fold crosswise. (Instead of folding crosswise, you could fold into thirds.)

Now you've completed your folding and are about to chuck the lot in the closet. Think again! Domestic doyenne, Martha Stewart, suggests you consider this instead: "Slip each set into one of its pillowcases, and store the sets by size -- twin, full, and so on -- with colors, trim, or other defining details clearly visible." (See top right photo.) Martha also advises adding a bundle of chalk to your linen closet to keep folded laundry fresh and dry. You can learn more here. Thanks Martha!

Flower Fetish

Happy Tuesday everyone, sorry for the late post! Today, is dedicated to Austrian designer Josef Frank, one of the founders of 'Swedish Modernism' and one of my all-time favorites!

I first learned of Frank's bold aesthetic last year when Design*Sponge featured the home of Brooklyn design team, Deadly Squire. In lieu of a headboard, Frank's fabric was stretched on canvas to create the illusion of one. The large-scale florals and bold color gave this room punch and I was immediately smitten.

A botany enthusiast, Frank rejected the austere modernism of his time and instead drew from nature for inspiration. Last Spring, I fell in love with Anthropologie's Jayne sofa upholstered in Frank's vibrant 'Hawaii' print in brown. But at $3,498 a pop can we say 'investment piece'?

This week, I was thrilled to see Frank's exuberant style featured in two very different homes in the June/July issue of Domino. What a happy accident! In the home of stylist Tina Chai, she injects color and pattern into her neutral but eclectic living room with curtains in Frank's 'Hawaii' print - this time seen in white.

In the warm modernist home of Carina Schott a.k.a Nonchalant Mom (a great blog by the way), Frank's "Windows" print aptly functions as a screen connecting the passageway to her children's room.

Previously hard to find, Josef Frank fabric and accessories can now be purchased online at Just Scandinavian (check them out for more fun prints!). However, with a price point of about $240/yard with a three yard minimum, Frank's fabrics may be a stretch for most budgets. If like me you're still wishing and dreaming, IKEA's Stockholm Blad easy chair ($349) and curtains ($59.99) are an understated alternative that could make the cut.

Cozy Cushions

Did I mention I really love re-purposing? I think I got it from my Mom, aka MacGyver, who I swear has an alternate use for just about anything.

So, this week's idea comes courtesy of Flickr where I came across this great photo pool called 'Made From Recycled Sweaters'. Its members are a group of crafty ladies who upcycle old sweaters into items like soft toys; handbags; hats; and my favorite, throw pillows!

Even if you only sew by hand the sweater cushions look like a doable weekend project. What an awesome way to re-purpose that favorite sweater you inadvertently shrunk in the wash :-) You can even add sweet little touches like the flower applique in the top left photo. So go ahead and pull those old sweaters out of storage you may be in for a sweater surprise!

Tropical Punch

There's just something about the color, coral. Evocative of a Caribbean getaway, it's an intoxicating mix of red and orange that I liken to a refreshing tropical sipper.

In the urban jungle that is downtown Manhattan, I recently found myself drawn to this sweet, but not saccharine, hue. At Jonathan Adler, a pretty pale-coral sofa was the perfect foil for bold pillows. And my mouth was agape at the gorgeous coral-colored accessories I spied at Emporio Armani. Pack it all to go please! I also made a pit stop (lengthy detour) at Anthropologie. What pretty goodies! Although, many things were priced out of reach, affordable items like the drawer pulls above ($6.00 - $18.00) provided Anthro cache for not a lot of cash.

So, it got me thinking of other ways we could incorporate this great pop of color into our homes.

Below, coral wallpaper makes a dramatic headboard in a bold geometric print. Throw pillows in contrasting, smaller-scaled prints add balance.

An oversize painting provides an instant 'pick me up' in this neutral bathroom.

Below, coral upholstery is the focal point of this outdoor space. Cabana stripes in the same color add a fun yet cohesive touch. Quick tip: if you want to add a shot of coral without the commitment just add flowers. As you can see, even a few posies make an impact.

Over-the-top antler chandeliers make this traditional kitchen memorable while the painted counter-stools help ground the room. For a more modern look, try swapping boxy linen pendants like these beauties from CB2 ($19.95). And in lieu of clear vases, add shapely opaque planters such as these from Target ($14.99 - $24.99) for a bold punctuation point.

Seeking Simplicity

I read somewhere, can't remember where, that you can't organize clutter. You can move it around from place to place, but truly, it just has to go.

In our 2-bedroom home decluttering is essential to our sanity and is sometimes the topic of debates as to what exactly constitutes clutter. To my husband, it would be my lovingly curated vases. To me, it would his large, empty sea salt buckets - we have a aquarium. As you may imagine, these things aren't going anywhere soon. So in the meantime, we will turn our focus towards greener pastures.

Right now these items are on our out-box list:

outgrown clothing and toys
ill-fitting outfits
small household items

To jump start the process, I contacted a local charity to schedule a pick-up this weekend. Do I have my bags full and ready to go? No. But I did commit to two bags of items. So now, it puts the onus on me to do just that.

If like me you sometimes feel stuck, a home-organization site like FlyLady is an invaluable guide for steering you through the clutter. With her system, it all starts with keeping your kitchen sink clean and slowly expands from there. She also has great tip sheets like How To Declutter, here.

In any event, creating a organized and serene home won't happen overnight. And in fact, I think it is an ongoing process. But I know that when those two bags leave my home tomorrow I'll be one happy woman.

What I'm Loving Now: Slipcovered Sofas

To me nothing says laidback luxury like a slipcovered sofa. Even if a room boasts other precious pieces, the mere presence of a comfy, slipcovered sofa says, "My home is meant to be lived in and enjoyed. Relax and stay a while." That's a heck of a lot for a couch to say, right? ;-)

Anyway, I absolutely love this type of furniture in crisp white but I don't have the nerve to try it in my own home with two toddlers on the lam. However, I secretly admire those who do. Yes, you always hear that you can just throw a white slipcover in the wash or bleach it if it gets dirty/stained. But I am convinced I'd be doing that everyday! Can someone really spill the beans and tell me that white slipcovers are not as easy as folks claim? Nevertheless, it looks fabu. However, if you're a mere mortal like me, a darker neutral or even a bright hue may be more functional.

Color aside, slipcovers are a great way to pull together mismatched furniture or to change the look of your room on a whim. Slipcovers are certainly easier to clean than regular upholstery and cheaper than reupholstering in general. In fact, what makes the pieces I have shown similar to upholstery is that they are customized to fit the shape of the sofa and also feature separate back and seat covers. This creates a tailored fit that is very elegant.

Custom-made slipcovers are of course more expensive depending on the materials chosen and the complexity i.e. lots of curves vs. a clean-lined silhouette. However, if you are handy with a sewing machine, making slipcovers are a snap. Otherwise, pre-made slipcovers like the ones shown above (natural cotton duck cover, $49.99) and below (merlot cover with box-seat cushion cover, $89.99) are another budget-friendly choice.

Save My Plant!

Does anyone have this lovely plant? My sweet hubby got it for me as a Mother's Day gift. I love it but am at a loss as to how to care for it. According to hubby, it's a lily but he's not exactly sure what type. I thought it might be a peace lily but the pics I've seen online show much smaller plants.

In the interim, this big baby is beginning to look not so perky. As you can see, I haven't re-potted it yet because I was told to wait a little while to let the plant acclimatize to our home environment. However, I have moved it to a more shaded and spacious spot and have watered it once per the plant vendor's instructions. Any other ideas? The bottom leaves are dying and I am worried the upper ones will soon follow. Would love to hear from you green-thumbs out there! Thanks!

Organizational Heaven!

Howdy folks! This weekend's inspiration comes via Apartment Therapy. It's there that I was introduced to and floored by the awesome home of Benita Larsson. In addition to all the gorgeous eye-candy, Benita provided her top 10 tips for staying organized.

Tip #10 - 'Buy white', really resonated with me. According to Larsson, she always buys "day to day supplies in white, no print, no color, just pure white. Paper towels, toilet brush, dish towels, laundry pegs, toilet paper, candles, napkins, the list goes on. White looks clean and fresh and doesn’t draw attention to the boring day to day stuff we all need. Also with white you see when it gets dirty and needs changing."

Truer words were never spoken. In my home we have three white cotton bathmats that we rotate weekly. When I bought them I quickly realized that they served as a true barometer of how clean our floors really were! Using white items around your home forces you to stay 'honest' and keep things nice and clean. So just in case you need a push in that direction white is for you!

Anyway, just look at how white looks so fresh in her home. Not stark at all but really a great neutral palette that minimizes the mundane and makes her pretty things pop! You can read more of Benita's organizing tips and see additional photos of her lovely home here.

Shady Deal-ings

I don't know about the rest of you, but when I pore over the glossies my eyes immediately hone in on the special touches that make the room. So of course when I espied a Noguchi reverse pod lamp (shown here from Room and Board) in this Domino story, I couldn't get it out of my mind.

I love the Noguchi's organic shape, texture and warm glow. But the $275 price tag - not so much. But the great thing about paper lampshades is that they are available at every price point so you don't need a big wallet to get the big wow factor. So I'll file away the reverse pod for now.

In the meantime, it got me thinking about other affordable options. For example, two of these bedside table lamps from Target ($19.29) would look great flanking a modern bed and setting a romantic mood. While this overhanging lamp from IKEA ($39.99) would be so chic in a reading corner. And although not task-lighting, this orb floor lamp from Homeclick ($80.50), would also look handsome in a living room.

A great idea from Living Etc. is to use a grouping of inexpensive paper lampshades at various heights in lieu of a chandelier. Look at the wonderful impact it has! A couple of these lanterns from Overstock ($29.99) would be a great choice as well.

Pretty*Practical tip: If you have kids in your home, a floor lamp placed in a corner might be the best solution for getting the look you want while avoiding sticky fingers and knocked over lighting. Having a family doesn't mean you have to comprise entirely on style, just making simple adjustments can result in a win-win!

Look For Less: Canopy Living

Hope everyone had a great weekend, and of course, that all the Moms had a great Mother's Day. Speaking of being a mom, on Friday I got a catalog in the mail for Canopy - the new home furnishings line from Wal-Mart. It was not immediately apparent that Wal-Mart was the producer/vendor so I was initially drawn in by the lifestyle shots and copy that suggested a better life awaited with Canopy. What mom wouldn't fall for alluring words like: "Pets on the sofa, toys in the living room floor and dinner guests arriving any minute - we understand how life works...Relax, it's Canopy." Well, I sure did.

Anyway, the whole look and feel of the catalog suggests that Canopy is Pottery Barn/Crate and Barrel's budget-conscious cousin. While I wasn't crazy about the look of the upholstered furniture pieces (finishing touches like the piping looked a little wonky), I was pleasantly surprised by the wooden furniture items which looked substantial and appeared to be of a nice quality. Prices range from about $130 for an end table to $700 for a king-size sleigh bed. Although my tastes run more modern, I can see Canopy's offerings working well in most homes. Because it's all about the mix, isn't it?

Has anyone seen this new line in person? If you have, what do you think? Is Wal-Mart onto something with a branded lifestyle collection or should it go back to the drawing board? Quick Fix: Window Dressing

As we head off into another busy weekend, I'd like to introduce Pretty*Practical's first 'Quick Fix' feature. In terms of household projects, I am all about instant gratification, so you'll see plenty of fixes that can be accomplished in a few hours or less.

Today's 'Quick Fix' involves improving the rather uninspiring view of my neighbor's unpainted cement wall. With a $3:00 roll of repositionable film from Ace Hardware in hand, I quickly went to work doing the following:

cutting the film to size
moving the film around on the glass until I had an even fit
running my hand across the film to eliminate bubbles

And voila! Insta-privacy that is pretty and still lets light in. In fact, the windows look as if they were purchased this way.

I am a fool for cute storage ideas especially ones that involves repurposing. I love this idea found via Sfgirlbybay. It involves using cupcake tins to store jewelry. This system would also be great for housing other small items like your sewing notions or crafting goodies. So clever!

Color Me Happy

I never really appreciated the impact of color on my mood and quality of life until about a year ago a party guest innocently commented, "I really love all of the brown in your place".

This observation came as a surprise to me because I love color. But, it made me look at my surroundings with new eyes. I indeed discovered a heavy dose of brown accents throughout my home such as chocolate curtains; dark African masks; earthy ceramics and sepia-toned art. And truth be told, this color-scheme reflected the way I was feeling at the time - kind of blah.

So I quickly set about changing all that. And now this spring, my home reflects a mood that feels just right - a warm neutral base with pretty pops of color that make my heart sing. Which brings me to my new favorite inspiration.

The May 2008 issue of Domino features actress Julianne Moore's design project for her wardrobe stylist, Leslie Fremar. This makeover perfectly illustrates the power of color to transform a 'brown' space into an inviting home. The muted blue sofa in the living room and the bright lemony yellow curtains in the bedroom are perfectly balanced by crisp white accents and organic touches such as the woven basket used as a stool. May Day

Hello everyone. This first post is going to be a practical one. I have just put a toddler who refuses to sleep back to bed and must make a midnight deadline. Why today? Because I promised one of my best friends that today would be the day; May 1 is a national (labor) holiday in many countries; and most importantly, another dear friend gave birth today. All in all, it just seemed auspicious ;-)

I promise my next post will focus on the pretty but I must take the first tentative step into blogland. So, here it is. Welcome to Pretty* Practical!
